Mahleb, native to the Middle East used as a flavoring for baked goods. Mahleb is an aromatic spice with flavor similar to a combination of bitter almond and cherry and similar also to marzipan. Mahleb is used in Greek cuisine in different types of holiday breads and in Turkish cuisine in scones and other pastries. In Egypt, it is used to make a paste with honey, sesame seeds and nuts and eaten as a dessert or a snack with bread.
